In the mood for something new? Celebrate the 25th anniversary of Francis Ford Coppola's "The Outsiders" with our "Outsiders" Four-Pack! Four grape varietals that live on the edge of California wine society. A great way to spring yourself from the Cab/Merlot/Rambo sequel duldrums.
Robert Foley Charbono, Napa Valley, 2006- It's no secret that Robert Foley is one of our favorite winemakers here at the store. While he is most known for his Cabernet-based Claret ($150), his best kept secret is his Charbono. There are only 60 or so acres of Charbono left planted in California which is a crying shame. A medium body, fruit forward, and, dare I say, grapey wine. Delicious with any Italian fare.
Parador Tempranillo, Napa Valley, 2004- A California take on Spains finest. Our good friend Steve Ventrello went to the Rioja region of Spain and "suitcased" home clippings from the finest vineyards. He planted them near Pahlmeyer and Bryant Family. Only 125 cases were produced. The wine shows plum and earth tones, backed by purple-red fruit nuances.
Mathis Grenache, Sonoma Valley, 2005- Peter Mathis, winemaker for Ravenswood, fashioned a gem from this delicious Rhone varietal. All the great Grenache characteristics are there: aromas of ripe black cherries and dried cranberries, followed by pomegranate, blackberry, and white pepper on the palatte. Great with spicy food.
Opolo Sangiovese, Paso Robles, 2005- This is not your grandfather's Chianti. A great find from the Central Coast , the 2005 Opolo Sangiovese has flavors of black cherry, earth, spices, and a vanilla undertone from the American Oak. Goes perfect with hearty red sauces and winter nights.
